that Ordinance. But it is impossible to be infallible.

(v). *In one case a whole Ordinance (No. 11 of 1905)

which had been erroneously omitted has been inserted on a printed slip etc. "This Ordinance was omitted on the advice of the

Treasurer. At the last minute it was decided to revive it, and the

question what to do with it was discussed, and I pointed out that

without reprinting a great many pages no other course was possible

than printing it on a slip. It of course could not be inserted in

the Index. In these circumstances if the Government want it re-

-printed, they must bear the cost.

You will now see that the information which has been

given to you is not quite so reliable as it should have been, and

that the slips are such that the trivial ones, which are the

greater number, are unavoidable and that a "Corrigenda* is inevit-

-able, and that the few serious ones will be immediately corrected.

If however the Government decide now to have what I recommended

six months ago, an independent investigation I can of course have

no objection, but I cannot accept your suggestion as to the way in

which errors should be dealt with without much more consideration.

In any event however I must ask that the question of

remuneration be now considered, and that before considering it the

Executive Council should take steps to ascertain the real facts of

the case in the only possible way, that is, by conference with my-

-self. In conclusion I must express my great regret that the

enormous labour which the work has entailed upon me should have b

been set aside and the occasion of my presenting the Volumes to

the Council should have only resulted in adverse criticism, much

of which is as I have pointed out groundless. I shall be happy to

keep any appointment to discuss the matter which you may make.
